Teach Kids About Jesus All Year Long

By Jessica Wolstenholm

You can teach kids about Jesus all year long! Help children get to know their Savior at Easter, but don’t stop there. . .

On the way to soccer practice last night, my 5-year-old son gazed out the car window, looked up into the sky and said, “Mom, wouldn’t it be cool if we could take a rocket ship to heaven so we could meet Jesus?”

Yeah, buddy. That would be SO COOL!

Oh how I wish it were possible. I picture Jesus waiting for that ship to land right outside the pearly gates. He’d have a huge smile on His face because . . . boys and rocketships! He’d hand my son a glass of lemonade and they’d walk and talk. I wonder what Joshua would say (maybe I don’t want to know – little boys often say the most embarrassing things!).

My boy hasn’t yet asked Jesus to come live in his heart. He’s expressed interest but we’re taking our time to make sure he understands the foundational truths that are important in growing a lasting friendship with Jesus. But we talk about Jesus often and little by little, his Savior is becoming real to him. After he dreamed about shooting himself up to heaven he said, “It’s weird that we can’t see Jesus.”

Yes, son. I wish we could, too.

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before they left. Matthew 19:14-15

I love that his heart longs to know Jesus, even if he doesn’t realize it. His questions tell me that he’s searching to understand this person we talk so much about in our home.

Jesus said, “the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” I’ve thought long and hard about what exactly He meant by this. Jesus wanted His disciples to know that to be innocent like a child is something to long for; to aspire to. Forty plus years of life weighs heavily on my heart so I wouldn’t ever think to dream about taking a rocket ship up to heaven for a day to say hi to Jesus. But maybe I should.

Last month we had the amazing opportunity of reconnecting with the person of Jesus as we shared Him with our kids. But remember, Easter doesn’t end on Easter Sunday. Actually, resurrection day is just the beginning of the Easter season on the traditional church calendar. Whether you follow a liturgical calendar or not, teaching your kids about Jesus doesn’t need to end on Easter Sunday. Here are a few powerful ways we can continue learning the Gospel and study the life of Jesus and hopefully make Him real (even though we can’t see Him or take a rocket ship to visit Him) this season.

Sixteen may seem like a lot of episodes but they are only 5 minutes long! Commit to watching one each day for the next few weeks. If you want a simpler plan, focus on the following episodes that highlight big moments in Jesus’ life and lead you right into Easter season conversations:

Episode 1 – Jesus is the Messiah

Isaiah’s prophecy declares the coming Savior.

Episode 3 – Jesus is Born

A look back at the Christmas story; Jesus’ arrival.

Episode 5 – Jesus is Baptized

Jesus is God’s son, a part of the Trinity.

Episode 10 – Jesus Performs Miracles

Miracles show the power and authority of Jesus.

Episode 14 – Jesus Serves the Last Supper

Jesus is the Passover lamb. His blood is the blessing; the new covenant.

Episode 15 – Jesus Dies for Us

Jesus is betrayed, tried and sentenced to die on the cross.

Episode 16 – Jesus is Risen

On the third day, Jesus is raised from the dead!

If you choose to focus on the highlights, I encourage you to go back and watch the others in the next few months. Easter doesn’t have to be the only time we teach our kids about Jesus. But it’s a great place to start! Get your family talking about their Savior this season and then get to know Him throughout the rest of the year. The more we include Jesus in our everyday life, the more He’ll start to feel like a friend. We may not be able to shoot up to heaven in a rocketship and visit with Him regularly, but we can walk with Jesus daily as we grow in relationship with Him.
