This Mother’s Day marks another year I am without a mother to celebrate. I’ve survived six Sundays set aside in May without a reason to buy a card to say, “Thank you for all you do, Mom.” The pain of watching others acknowledge their own mothers is hard, but as the years pass, I find comfort in celebrating the many strong women in my world who have made my life better because of their example and their friendship. 

Sure, Mother’s Day is a special day set aside to honor the hard, thankless, maddening, beautiful, amazing, and important job of raising humans. But what about all of the other incredible women who love nieces, nephews, students, neighbors, and friends with their whole heart?

This Mother’s Day, take time to celebrate all of the amazing women in your life: the aunties, mentors, teachers, caregivers, and influential friends who’ve loved you so well they’ve left a mark on your heart. Tell them what they mean to you and how your life is better because they are in it.
